A shared driveway is essential for providing reliable access to multiple homes, but poor drainage can lead to ongoing maintenance issues and difficult driving conditions. In Sultana, CA, a small cluster of homes faced significant drainage problems at their shared driveway entrance. Years of vehicle traffic had compacted the soil creating a low point that collected water. Previous repair attempts had only added more material without addressing the underlying issue—proper water diversion.

• Low-Point Formation: Continuous use of the driveway had compacted the soil, forming a natural basin that trapped rainwater and created muddy, impassable conditions.
• Ineffective Repairs: Previous fixes involved adding material without planning for water runoff, leading to continued pooling and erosion.
• Lack of Proper Drainage Features: Without intentional grading, stormwater had no designated flow path, further worsening the issue over time.

To resolve these issues to create a long-term solution, we implemented a strategic drainage and driveway stabilization plan:

• Constructed a Swale for the Entrance: We created a designated swale to the north of the driveway entrance. This feature allows rainwater to collect and slowly percolate into the ground, rather than pooling on the driveway surface. 
• Scarified and Regraded the Driveway: We loosened and redistributed the compacted soil, establishing a gradual slope away from the driveway to prevent water accumulation.
• Constructed a Secondary Swale: On the back end of the driveway, we built a swale to intercept any remaining runoff, directing it into the soil for natural absorption.
• Sloped the Driveway Surface for Controlled Drainage: The newly graded driveway now channels all surface water into the designated swales, ensuring rainwater no longer pools in the traffic area.

To provide a stable and durable surface, we installed 80 tons of base rock, achieving a 4-inch depth across the entire driveway.

Base rock is an excellent material for driveway construction for several key reasons:

• Cost-Effective: Compared to asphalt or concrete, base rock is a more affordable solution while still providing long-term durability.
• Excellent Drainage Properties: Unlike solid surfaces that cause water runoff, base rock allows water to filter through, reducing erosion and pooling.
• Stability and Strength: When compacted properly, base rock creates a firm and load-bearing surface that can withstand heavy vehicle traffic.
• Low Maintenance: Unlike dirt or loose gravel, properly graded and compacted base rock reduces rutting and washouts, minimizing upkeep costs.

By implementing proper drainage strategies and reinforcing the surface with base rock, we provided these residents with a functional, long-lasting driveway that eliminates past issues with standing water and erosion.
